Eating matters

We use the little free time we have between appointments to try out the Balkan cuisine. On the Balkans, you don’t eat Indian or Italian. You eat local. Which might be a problem for those who are on a double-V-and-double-U-diet (vegan, vegetarian, wholefood). The Balkan diet is more on the paleo-side of diets: meat in all variations. Our favorite so far is Burek with yoghurt. Burek is a pastry dumpling with various fillings which is best when you eat it fresh out of the oven.

Food plays a important role during our visits. The guest brings something to eat whereever they go, even in the smallest hut, you are offered coffee and cookies during a five-minute visit . This culture makes it all the harder for those people here who can’t even provide enough food for their children. That is what makes Otaharin‘s greenhouse project in Bijeljina so important: it not only provides jobs for the locals, but also healthy food.
